Recipes
A recipe is the foundation of everything on your menu. It describes how a dish is made — which ingredients are needed, in what quantities, and how they are prepared.
When you change a recipe (for example, swap an ingredient), that change automatically flows through to every meal and menu that uses it. You never have to update prices or nutrition values manually.
What a recipe contains
- Name — the dish name as it will appear in the system
- Ingredients — each ingredient with its quantity and unit (grams, litres, pieces, etc.)
- Preparation steps — cooking instructions for kitchen staff
- Nutrition facts — calculated automatically from the ingredients (calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates)
- Portion size — the default serving size
- Category — which recipe category it belongs to (e.g. Soups, Desserts)
- Allergens — automatically shown based on the ingredients used
- Picture — optional photo of the finished dish
- Notes — additional cooking tips or warnings
Sub-recipes
A sub-recipe is a component that is prepared separately and then used inside another recipe. For example, a tomato sauce can be its own sub-recipe, used in several different pasta dishes. This saves you from writing out the sauce instructions every time.
When to use sub-recipes:
- Sauces or dressings used in multiple dishes
- Stocks and bases
- Dough or pastry used in multiple items
- Any component that takes significant preparation
Finding your recipes
Go to Meals → Recipes. Use the search bar at the top to find a recipe by name, or filter by category. You can also sort by creation date or last modified date.
Creating a recipe
- Click + Create and fill in the recipe name
- Select a category (helps organize recipes)
- Enter the portion size in grams or ml
- Under Ingredients, click + Add and search for each ingredient by name
- Enter the quantity needed (the system will suggest units based on the ingredient)
- Repeat for all ingredients
- Under Preparation Steps, click + Add and type each step in order
- Optionally upload a picture of the finished dish
- Add any notes or warnings (e.g., "Use caution with sharp knives")
- Click Save when done
The system automatically calculates:
- Total nutrition facts (calories, protein, fat, carbohydrates, fiber, salt)
- All allergen warnings based on ingredients
- Cost per portion (if ingredient prices are set)
Editing a recipe
Open any recipe and click Edit. You can change:
- Ingredient amounts
- Preparation steps
- Portion size
- Category
- Picture
- Notes
When you edit a recipe, the changes affect all meals and menus that use it. Customers will see updated nutrition facts and allergen labels immediately. Test changes before going live if they significantly alter the dish.
Copying a recipe
If you want to create a similar recipe based on an existing one:
- Open the recipe you want to copy
- Click Copy or Save As
- Give it a new name
- Make any adjustments needed
- Click Save
This is faster than creating from scratch.
Printing a recipe
Open a recipe and click the print icon to get a printer-friendly version with all ingredients and instructions. This version is suitable for posting in the kitchen.
Recipe versions / History
If your organization tracks changes, you can view:
- Who created the recipe and when
- Who last edited it
- What changes were made (sometimes)
This helps with food safety audits and traceability.
Using recipes in meals and menus
Once you have created recipes, you can:
- Add them to meals (which appear on menus)
- Use them as sub-recipes in other recipes
- Assign them to specific days in weekly menus
- Set special prices for them on certain menus
See the Meals and Menu pages for more details.
